The 1861 Foundation was created from a simple conviction: institutions should exist to serve ideals—not the other way around.

Our role is not to stand in front of the Medal of Honor, but behind it. We exist to serve the Medal, support those entrusted with its legacy, and help ensure that its meaning remains as powerful for future generations as it is today.
